Unlike Capcom's layoffs, which were completely expected for obvious reasons, this wasn't expected. By me, at least. SEGA's been doing quite well for themselves for a while. However, laying off people in their mobile offices is no surprise to me though. There's no need to have a bloated division in an industry completely based on cheap blockbusters.
Sega has been struck with layoffs to their London branch and mobile teams according to a report by Polygon. A company rep discussed the matter below.
“Sega is in the process of consolidating certain
functions of the Sonic and Mobile departments within Sega of America,
where the management and production for those areas of the business
reside,” we were told. “As part of that strategy a limited number of
redundancies have taken effect in our European office, based in London.”
Sega was hit with layoffs last year too, so this seems to be a nasty trend going on within the company.
